Enchanted by the Book Contest
The June/July 2023 contest has closed, but you can read the winners below.
When were you enchanted by a book, poem, or story?
Post-contest update
In June 2023, when Substack Notes was new, I ventured to meet some writers who shared my interests by hosting a contest with the question “When were you enchanted by a book, poem, or story?” Five fellow writers vied for “Most Like-ly” and “Most Florid” prizes (for Likes from readers and for gorgeous writing style). Three were invited to assign me a subject for a future post or request a personalized poem.
This was the page where participants linked their articles in the comments. A separate page announced the winners at the end of the voting period. (Hint: Everyone was a winner!) Two essays assigned by prizewinners (here and here) and one poem about Raggedy Ann ended the contest.
The original post from the voting phase of the contest
If you are new to this page, here’s a quick briefing:
A few weeks ago I announced a friendly contest on an earlier version of this page, asking the question just above: When were you enchanted by a book, poem, or story? Five Substack writers shared links to their answers in the comments section below. Now it’s time to vote for your favorite entry. I’ll announce the prizes in my regular newsletter Monday.
To cast a vote . . .
In the Comments section below, follow the links to all 5 contest entries. Then come back to this page to click the Heart for the entries you like. Simple! Entries are:
“Making Stone Soup” by
“The most enchanting piece of writing” by
“The Enchantment of Raggedy Ann” by
“Enchantment by Novel” by
“Three Lights” by
Note: Hearts on the author’s page do not count as votes. You’ve got to come back to this page after reading.
It’s ok to vote more than once. (“Vote early and often.”) If you voted a week ago and want to add a vote for one of the newer entries, all votes count.
Voting ends Sunday, July 16 at 10 p.m. U.S. Mountain Time (Midnight Eastern/9 p.m. Pacific).
I did not need to think, for even a second, about the piece of literature that enchanted me the most.
Thank you for this lovely idea Tara, I am honored to post my piece alongside these amazing writers.

This is such an enchanting idea! Here is my submission and I can't wait to read the others. (I read Michael Maiello's and loved it. It gave me the idea to write my own.)
Mine is called "The Enchantment of Raggedy Ann" and it comes in at 808 words. This was so much fun!
