Aw so sweet. I’m reading Make Way for Ducklings to my son’s class this week. I’m originally from near Boston where the related statues are and we’ve got photos of him there as a baby and last year to show the class.
Happy Mother’s Day to you and all the mothers in their shapes and forms.
As statues go, that one is uncommonly eye-catching. I’ve seen it just once. It captures the sweetness of young childhood and the book well, don’t you think? Happy Mother’s Day to you, too.
A mother’s love transcends species. We were crossing the late, great Key Bridge and took the first south exit where we found a mother goose and her brood stuck between Jersey barriers on both sides of the road. With four way flashers blinking we bailed out and started scoping up the not yet ugly goslings and gently landed them on the other side of the barrier where mom rounded up her brood and went forth.
We also had a brood of baby quail fall into my daughter’s bedroom window well. We scooped up the little fuzz balls and deposited them back up to their mom. Happy, happy.
And last, but not least, recently a mom killdeer was trying to draw me away from her pups, which by chance I saw. Tiny fuzz balls running around on toothpicks.
God bless all moms today, mothers to creatures great and small. They are blessed with the gift of bringing new lives into the world, then protecting and nurturing those little lives with a mother’s love.
I have this theory that baby everythings are cute to help offset how much trouble they are. If they weren’t cute, they would all end up in the river and the world would end. Cute is what keeps the world going.
Baby geese barely squeak by since they transition from cute to ugly so quickly. By the time the parents realize what happened, it’s too late. The goslings are already mean enough to defend themselves. I’m not sure how long it takes for them to get to the green sidewalk deposit stage, but probably too soon too.
Beautiful story Tara! So relatable from past family rescues myself 😊. Can you share to the larger audience on facebook too? Maybe with a link back for those that want see more of your blog? Well done and happy Mother’s Day! You can be a very proud mother!
Thanks, Daren! What a treat to have you dropping by the comments station. 🙌 This is a good one for Facebook. I’ll do that. Thanks for the Mothers’ Day wishes. 😘
Oh, Tara! I'm so glad you reposted this one, as I'd not seen it before. Your clever children and their pals saved the day. Got to love a happy ending. I've seen videos online of ducklings disappearing into storm drains. It's a bit of a wonder we don't lose more of them that way, poor things. Thank you for this delightful and timely read.
Glad you enjoyed it! The neighbor kids really did the power lifting. I'm glad my daughter called me outside. It would have been a shame to miss the drama and fun. 😅
We decided to travel to a local nature preserve yesterday and take a walk. They have a great trail around a lake that is about three miles. My wife, daughter, myself, and our dog all enjoyed the beautiful day. We saw ducks, Great Blue Herons, Canadian Geese, and lots more wildlife. It was a great day.
I love this story! My two boys, who are in college actually remembered Mother’s Day and texted me yesterday (without a prompt from their Dad). I was incredibly impressed. My daughter only realized the day after she heard my neighbor wish me happy Mother’s Day. She said, “it’s Mother’s Day?” Oh well.
Thanks for sharing this story again as I missed it the first time you posted it. I love this kind of neighborly, heartwarming wonderfulness! Well done everyone on an awesome rescue.
If I thought for one instant that a straw hat would have been helpful with the girls I would have gladly worn one. I have one now, of course, but I only wear it while attending lectures in philosophy or when the sun (or the truth) is particularly scorching.
Much like a red wheelbarrow, one must never underestimate the value of a good straw hat. Both are essential to a well-lived life.
This story made my Mother's Day. Thanks!
Thank you for sharing it, Dan! Glad you enjoyed it.

It absolutely does! There is always a kind of pilgrimage of visitors when I go there, too. So sweet.
A very beautiful story. We call them fluffy heads!
Thank you, Terry. That's a good name for them. No wonder kids love to hold them closed in hands. 😂
Indeed! 😁

Those are heartwarming stories! Fuzzballs on toothpicks - who wouldn’t want to rescue those? Nature knew its business when it made babies cute. 🥰 😂

No argument. 🐥

The ones here on the greenbelt stay cute for awhile. That’s probably an urban adaptation.

There are many ways to have a perfect Mother's Day, and it sounds like your family found one. What a joy.

Haha! Way to go, boys. Your daughter the day after sounds like my daughter the day before. 😂 Happy Mother's Day (+1).
Yes!

I loved rolling the memory of it around for days. Reliving it to write it was a treat.
From now on I will not fail to keep a straw hat at the ready in case of an emergency. One can never be too prepared. Never.
Haha! Do I understand that you raised daughters without a straw hat?! Surely not. Possibly the prop is not as essential as I believe.

Oh Eloquentia, thy name is Ken! 😂
